To find out the true story of the grizzly bear’s evolutionary history, the researchers first took genetic samples of living black bears from the nearby village of Khirbet Ghanim. Boulton and his colleagues then tested the DNA of the samples with sequences from the genomes of two black bears in Africa.

Their findings were startling: Genetic analysis showed that there was actually a close genetic relationship among the black bears, which were about 90 percent related to the red bears of the same species. The genetic relationgospelhitzship indicated that red bears and black bears both evolved their distinctive horns, which they inherited from their African ancestors and which made them highly vulnerable to wolves.

According to Boulton, the finding suggests that many of the species that evolved with red bears, including grizzly bears, probably have had red bears that evolved with them as well.
